Laphonza Butler makes history as first Black openly lesbian U.S. senator

Laphonza Butler was sworn into the Senate Tuesday afternoon, making history as the first openly lesbian Black senator to serve in Congress, and the first openly LGBTQ senator to characterize California. She can even be the third Black lady to ever serve within the Senate.

Steven Horsford (D-Nev) launched an announcement saying that the CBC is trying ahead to the “much-needed perspective” Butler will deliver to the Senate with “her background and years of expertise” and as the only real Black lady at the moment serving within the Senate.
