The NHL’s Washington Capitals and NBA’s Washington Wizards are slated to move to Alexandria, Virginia, as a part of a $2 billion leisure complex effort, the state’s Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Wednesday.
The improvement, about 8 miles south of Washington, D.C., will home the new international headquarters for Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Capitals and Wizards, in addition to the new residence enviornment for the teams. The 9 million-square-foot district can even characteristic mixed-use retail, resort and convention areas.
“This is probably the most visionary sports and leisure improvement in the world. The Commonwealth will now be residence to two skilled sports teams, a new company headquarters, and over 30,000 new jobs – that is monumental,” Youngkin stated in a press release.
Construction on the complex is slated to start in 2025 and it’s set to open in late 2028.
The improvement is topic to legislative approval, the assertion famous. Legislators could have to greenlight the creation of the complex in the following Virginia General Assembly session.
The $2 billion funding will come from bond gross sales in addition to a $403 million contribution from Monumental Sports & Entertainment.
