Judge in Trump NY fraud trial extends gag order to legal professionals, says office has received ‘a whole lot’ of threats since trial started

A New York choose dominated Friday {that a} restricted gag order on Donald Trump must also apply to his attorneys, citing their remarks about his employees and the deluge of threats and harassment which have “inundated” his chambers since the previous president’s fraud trial started.

“The risk of, and precise, violence ensuing from heated political rhetoric is well-documented,” Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron wrote in a fiery courtroom order Friday afternoon.

“The First Amendment proper of defendants and their attorneys to touch upon my employees is way and away outweighed by the necessity to defend them from threats and bodily hurt,” Engoron wrote.

The gag order bars attorneys in the case from making any public statements, in or out of courtroom, that reference any and all confidential communications between the choose and his employees.

Engoron had beforehand imposed an analogous gag order on Trump, after the previous president despatched a social media submit attacking the choose’s clerk. Trump has violated that gag order twice since the trial started final month.

Engoron’s latest order singled out two of Trump’s legal professionals, Christopher Kise and Alina Habba, for making “repeated, inappropriate remarks” about his principal legislation clerk.

They have been “falsely accusing her of bias in opposition to them and of improperly influencing the continuing bench trial,” Engoron wrote.
