BEIJING — Henry Kissinger, a former U.S. secretary of state, met with China’s Defense Minister Li Shangfu in Beijing on Tuesday, the ministry said in a statement.

The U.S. embassy in Beijing didn’t instantly reply to a CNBC request for remark.

Kissinger’s assembly with Li comes as John Kerry, particular presidential envoy for local weather, can be in Beijing for climate talks. Kerry’s journey to China follows these of U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the final a number of weeks.

Li and his U.S. defense counterpart haven’t spoken formally regardless of elevated tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

Blinken mentioned he failed to restore military-to-military talks with China throughout his go to final month.
